Introduction
This training program provides the elected SHE Representative with the required knowledge and understanding to enable him to effectively perform his SHE duties.

The Mine Health and Safety Act of 1996 makes provision for the appointment of Health and Safety Representatives. While representation on health and safety matters is a right of all employees, it is important for mine management to have trained and dedicated people who are able to identify hazards and risks in the working environment – not only from a legal point of view but also from a productivity angle.
Overall Course Objective
The overall objective of this training programme is to empower prospective health and safety representatives to be able to play a meaningful role towards the improvement of health and safety at the mine
Learning Objectives
It is the aim of this programme to develop Health and Safety Representatives who are able to:
- Explain the legal and specified requirements to conduct health and safety representation activities at a workplace
- Participate in the actions to resolve health and safety disputes and complaints
- Participate in activities within health and safety structures
Rights and Powers of Health and Safety Representatives
- Represent employees on health and safety matters
- Direct employees to leave dangerous work areas
- Assist any employee who has left an unsafe working area
- Identify potential hazards & risks to health and safety of employees
- Make recommendations to management and Health and Safety committees on health and safety issues affecting employees
- Inspect documents kept in terms of the
- Request relevant documents from Inspector
- Consult with technical expertise
- Participate in consultations on health and safety issues
